How Long Does an Electric Vehicle Take to Charge?

2019 Kia Niro Plugin Hybrid Charging

Electric Vehicles or (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular amongst San Fernando drivers due to their sleek design and eco-friendly operating methods. In addition, they are becoming more accessible and easier to own due to the increase in charging stations and affordability. However, one of the first questions you probably ask yourself is, “How long does an electric vehicle take to charge?” Understanding the electric car charging time and methods will help you when choosing your new EV. Due to the variety of electric vehicles available, and the different charging stations, there is no one size fits all answer. Instead, this question’s response depends on several factors that will give you a better idea of the factors that affect your electric car charging time as you read ahead.

What are my Electrical Vehicle Charging Options? Three Available Choices

  1. Domestic Home Charging: A 120-volt outlet (called a Level One Charger) is generally not strong enough to charge an electric motor. So, you would need an electrician to install a 240-volt outlet (a Level Two Charger) that could handle charging the vehicle. If you are trying to charge with a 120-volt outlet, it could take days to charge your car.
  2. Professionally Installed Home Charging: To have an electrician install a 240-volt outlet to use your vehicle’s charging converter will significantly reduce the electric car charging time. Some companies supply DCFCs (DC Fast Chargers), but they are not compatible with every vehicle. They usually are found at public charging stations.
  3. Public Charging Stations: Many apartment complexes, office buildings, gas stations, bus stops, and shopping centers offer places for you to charge your electric car. If you commute from Valencia to Sylmar, you may be able to charge your car while you work!

Typical Charging Times Per Charging Station

Domestic Home Charging: The time varies depending on which voltage you are charging with:

  • 120-Volt Plug charging can take more than a day to charge your EV.
  • 140-Volt Plug charging can take about overnight to fully charge your EV. That is why it is good to intermix topping off the charge during the day to keep the car running at optimal capacity.

Public Charging Stations: As electric vehicles become more popular and affordable, there will be more DC charging stations that can charge your car in as little as thirty minutes. The typical charging station offers these options:

  • A regular charger station can take seven to eleven hours to charge your car entirely.
  • Charging stations that offer a higher voltage charger can reduce your electric charging car time to four to six hours.

Hybrid charging: A hybrid car is a part electric and part gasoline dependent vehicle, so it does not take as long to charge. This car should take four to six hours to fully charge because it switches gasoline at higher speeds, utilizing the electric battery less than a fully electric vehicle.
